Building the Factory of the Future with Augmented Reality

Teva employee using Augmented Reality solution

Learn all about how Teva is implementing Augmented Reality for the benefit of patients and employees.

In Teva we believe that digital transformation is a key element in accelerating growth. By modernizing operations and improving the way we make medicines, we are ensuring patients have faster and more reliable access to high-quality medicines.

To achieve this transformation, we are looking at cutting-edge technological tools, and our recently implemented Augmented Reality (AR) solution is an important milestone in enhancing the way teams work at Teva's manufacturing sites.

AR is no longer just a buzzword used in gaming or entertainment. Today, pharma companies around the world are exploring and experimenting with AR to improve accuracy and deliver life-changing medicines with greater precision. This powerful tool overlays digital instructions such as text, images, and videos onto real-world tasks.

At Teva, operators wear AR devices that guide them step-by-step through complex procedures, hands-free, presenting duration and evidence for each step to ensure the process is flawless.

“AR enables the digitalization of shop-floor operations, driving the implementation of standardized, robust, and streamlined processes. It can be a real game-changer in the way our manufacturing sites operate in the future,” says Re'em Sachs, Senior Director, MTS Strategy & Performance in Teva's Global Engineering.

Since launching the AR solution in selected manufacturing sites, Teva has created dozens of workflows and trained a growing number of operators. In just a few months, several thousands of production tasks were completed using AR. "At our Bulebel, Malta manufacturing site, the AR rollout has transformed how we manage changeovers and upskill our teams," explains Paul Gouder, Operational Excellence Project Manager for the site. "By standardizing changeovers, which is the process of switching our production line from manufacturing one product to another, digitalizing cleaning checklists, and delivering step-by-step Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) via AR headsets, we have significantly reduced manufacturing time. This enables us to deliver medicine faster, while maintaining our high-quality standards. This is critical as Teva scales new products, expands biosimilars, and keeps costs competitive in generics.”One of the things that set the AR solution apart is its effortless integration with Teva’s existing systems, making innovation straightforward and accessible. Reports are generated automatically, and quality review is done by exception, reducing the time and effort required for the successful completion of this important process and ensuring the highest standards of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) are being kept – a must when manufacturing medicines.

“From a technology perspective, our goal is to ensure Teva remains at the forefront of innovation — making smart, strategic choices in areas like AI, automation, digitalization, and modernization,” says Tzachi Menashe, Vice President of IT for Teva’s Global Operations. “One of our key ambitions in IT is to simplify processes that support Teva’s acceleration. These types of solutions are clearly the right path forward. We must be both creative and agile in our response, so we can provide the essential support our colleagues in manufacturing and operations need.”Beyond numbers, AR is helping our people. It supports remote expert guidance, and ensures every step is done right the first time. It’s not just a tech upgrade - it’s a better way of working. It's how we build the factory of the future.

As Teva continues to expand this technology, the future looks promising. With plans to scale across more manufacturing lines, the potential is enormous.

AR is making pharma operations more efficient, more reliable, and more human-centric — and that’s worth celebrating.
