In 2012, we provided $11.6 million in charitable support to non-profit organizations and $71million in product and in- kind donations. We also strongly encourage employee volunteering in the community. In 2012, more than 3,100 employees volunteered more than 30,000 hours with more than 540 community partners globally.
We are now moving to focus our philanthropic efforts on improving health through global initiatives while continuing to take into account local needs and opportunities. Our Global Community Relations Forum, with representatives from each of our main markets and business units, has framed our approach to community relations, employee volunteering and support for our business strategy through community work in our Global Community Relations Guidelines, which charts our approach.
Through partnerships with and funding for leading non-profit groups and community programs as well as Teva product donations and employee volunteering efforts, we aim to provide sustainable ways of giving. Additionally, we are working to increase the number of employees volunteering worldwide. As an incentive, we will launch a global volunteering recognition initiative in 2014. We also aim to offer new and diverse initiatives, including skills-based and family volunteering opportunities to encourage greater employee participation.
We also plan to develop a global donations policy under which all philanthropic decisions will be made according to global guidelines, while taking into account local needs and opportunities. We expect this approach to strengthen our philanthropy activities and improve sustainable value for Teva and the communities we support.
